How Did Tieesha Taylor Begin Her Journey Into Elder Law?

Tieesha Taylor did not originally plan to become an elder law attorney. Her initial dream was to pursue a career in real estate development. After earning her law degree and a master’s in real property development from the University of Miami, her goal was to build age-restricted housing for adults 55 and older.

Her path changed unexpectedly in 2007 when she was laid off from a real estate development job on her birthday during the housing market crash. Determined to find meaningful work, Tieesha began volunteering with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, where she inspected nursing homes and assisted living facilities and responded to complaints from residents.

One case profoundly shifted her career. She helped an elderly woman, whose rights had been wrongfully removed through guardianship, restore her independence. That experience inspired Tieesha to pursue elder law, marking the beginning of her life’s work.

Why Did Tieesha Taylor Decide To Open Her Own Law Firm?

Following her volunteer work, Tieesha realized elder law aligned with her passion for advocacy and service. She started her law firm from the second bedroom of her home, taking phone calls, networking, and slowly building her client base.

Early in her career, she also worked on veterans’ cases, which strengthened her resolve to serve older adults—a group she describes as often overlooked and forgotten. Recognizing the critical need for advocacy, she committed herself fully to elder law and founded Elderly Care Law Firm.

What Makes Elder Law Meaningful To Tieesha Taylor?

Tieesha was drawn to elder law because of the compassion and gratitude of her clients. She explains that when families received plans to secure long-term care or preserve their assets, she could see the immediate positive impact on their lives.

At the time she entered the field, elder law was still relatively new, and many people were unfamiliar with the term. Some even assumed “Elder Law” was her last name. To avoid confusion, she renamed her practice Elderly Care Law Firm. For Tieesha, the practice is more than legal documents—it’s about making an enduring difference for clients and their families.

May began her community service career with the Philippine Department of Health as a Computer Operator, providing vital technical support to healthcare workers across island provinces and helping to bridge technology gaps in remote medical settings. Her commitment to service extended beyond her official duties—she also volunteered in medical missions, assisting indigenous communities and contributing to the delivery of essential healthcare with empathy and cultural sensitivity. 

Continuing her dedication to public service, May later worked at a law firm as a Disability Service Coordinator, assisting military veterans in navigating disability services. She brought empathy, compassion, and heart to the role, ensuring that each veteran felt heard, respected, and supported throughout the process.
